VCS Vacations

1st Grade

VCSEnrichment Programs

The love of good literature and listening skills are enhanced through reading aloud books such as Charlotte’s Web, Little House in the Big Woods, and The Trumpet of the Swan, as well as quality picture books, poems, stories and biographies of famous Americans. The writing connection is enhanced with journals, letters and poetry. Students learn to critique each others’ work positively. Science themes are used each month including food and nutrition, insects, weather, birds, fish and the coral reef. These themes are used to further communication and math skills.

Field trips to local theatres, Venice beach, the Ringling Museums, a local retirement center and a dentist or doctors’ office open children to many aspects of the world around us.

Expectations

VCSBasic skills are the core of first grade. Children enter at widely different reading levels and the challenge is to guide each one to his best. Phonics instruction is central to the reading/language program which also introduces basic grammar rules. Dictionary skills are included in the spelling program. The math curriculum focuses on understanding and achieving competence in addition and subtraction facts, grouping, fractions, telling time, coins and use of money. Problem solving and concepts of numbers are stressed. Hands-on-activities, math games, and critical thinking questions round out the program.

Bible is the first order of the day. Lessons include Genesis, Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and the Life of Christ. We often join other classes for songs and prayer. Each year we participate in at least one missions project.
