The Music Program at VCS is very hands-on and highly participatory. We learn musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, timbre (instruments), conducting, the musical alphabet and staff, dynamics, intervals and harmony as well as study composers past and present. The classes will work on developing skills with playing instruments such as the Tonechimes, Boomwhackers, Recorders and Orff instruments as well as learn proper vocal technique. We will also create our own musical compositions utilizing the web-based program called Noteflight. At the Middle School/ High School level, students begin practically applying what they’ve learned in Elementary school and join our Chorus, Worship Teams, Human Video Club, Orchestra or Guitar Workshop. We study musical eras from Palestrina to Pop, and learn about opera and the American musical. During the year, each class participates in preparing our Christmas Program as well as looks forward to any Spring productions we may include, such as a Talent Show or Dinner Theater that will incorporate music and drama. Field trips for some classes are also included.
We are always looking for instrumentalists and vocalists who can join our growing Worship Teams. Currently, there are two Elementary teams and two Middle School/High School teams which incorporate vocals, drums, congas, bass, guitar and keyboard into our worship time. We practice once a week in preparation for Chapel on Friday mornings. We also encourage outreach and love to take music into our community preparing for performances at our local nursing homes and churches.
